Counselling for Primary-Aged Children (4-11)

Helping children make sense of big feelings through play, art, and connection.

I support children aged 4–11 years old to understand and express their emotions in a safe, supportive space. Using an integrative approach that combines play, creative work, and talking therapy, I help children build emotional regulation, confidence, and resilience.

With 17 years of experience as a primary school teacher and more than 6 as a counsellor for children, I bring a deep understanding of child development, behaviour, and the school environment into my therapeutic work.

Is counselling right for your child?

You may be noticing that your child is experiencing difficulties such as:

  • Anxiety or worries
  • Emotional outbursts or difficulty regulating feelings
  • Friendship or social challenges
  • Low self-esteem or confidence
  • Difficulties with change or transitions (e.g. school, family changes)
  • Bereavement or loss

Sometimes parents come to me with a clear concern. Other times, they simply feel something isn’t quite right and want early support before things become more difficult.

How I work with children

Every child is unique, so sessions are tailored to their individual emotional, social, and behavioural needs.

I use an integrative approach, which may include:

  • Play therapy techniques
  • Creative and art-based expression
  • Talking therapy

Children do not need to have the words for what they are feeling. Through play and creativity, they are able to communicate in a way that feels natural and safe. Sessions move at your child’s pace and are built around trust, consistency, and relationship.

Who I work with

I primarily work with children aged 4–11 in primary school, supporting emotional wellbeing and development through early intervention.

I also sometimes work with young people in early adolescence where there is a good therapeutic fit, particularly where emotional development is more aligned with a younger age range. These referrals are considered on a case-by-case basis.

I work best with families who:

  • Are open to the counselling process
  • Value consistency and regular attendance
  • Are willing to support their child throughout their therapeutic journey
  • Understand that emotional change takes time

In-school counselling support

Alongside my direct work with families, I work directly with primary schools to provide in-school counselling for children with more complex emotional needs, including trauma and family-related difficulties. This is commissioned by schools as part of their wider pastoral and wellbeing provision, supporting children within a familiar school setting.

"Amanda's support for our school has been invaluable. She has supported children with a wide range of needs and has shown flexibility and creativity in finding ways to engage them and establish relationships. We have seen real impact from the sessions in children's confidence in speaking up and knowing that their voice is important. Amanda has given children a safe space to explore their feelings and communicate them in a positive and empowering way." Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion, Horndean C of E Junior School, Hampshire (April 2025).
"Amanda has worked with our children for several years, supporting them with their emotions and really providing a safe space for them to talk openly and honestly. It has been wonderful to see how this support has really helped the children to open up outside of their sessions and speak more with other safe adults in their lives. Parents and teachers have observed the difference their sessions with Amanda have had on their overall wellbeing and happiness. We are extremely grateful for the support that Amanda has been able to provide. " SENCo, Waterlooville, Hampshire (July 2025)
